Carrie L. Langstraat, MD, gynecologic oncologist, Mayo Clinic, discusses the role of sentinel lymph nodes in patients with endometrial cancers.

Sentinel lymph nodes can help identify patients who are at risk for known metastasis or have known metastasis, data suggest. This is mostly in low-grade endometrial cancer, but it can be observed in other histologies as well, Langstraat says.

The identification of known metastasis provides physicians with a better idea of how to treat these patients. Overall, Langstraat concludes that sentinel lymph nodes is a safer means to identifying this subset of patients with endometrial cancers.
