Every story of violence in the workplace is different, Rhee says, though there is much to be learned from certain trends. At Kaiser Permanente, two urologists were shot and survived, but there have been three more such incidences outside of Kaiser Permanente since. The question remains as to whether urologists are in a specialty that requires more sensitivity to patients.

When looking at data and literature, Rhee says, generalizations are made regarding violence in healthcare, though there has been no breakdown by specialty. In addition to coverage, reimbursement, billing, and wait times, Rhee says violence is a serious issue in healthcare, as 60% of workplace violent encounters involve such workers.
