 mutations in patients with glioblastoma (GBM).

When investigators did a multivariate analysis of 101 patients with brain cancer, they found that in the presence of 

 did not show a significant correlation with overall survival. Patients who had an 

 mutation had very poor prognosis. Harboring a 

mutation seemed to be a significant driver in prognosis, says Razis. Age was also a significant parameter for prognosis, explains Razis.

. The analysis included 101 patients and provides valuable information for physicians moving forward.

Additionally, even though it has been known that 

 is associated with the mesenchymal subtype, patients who have neurofibromatosis and GBM do not seem to have a poor prognosis. Though rare, patients with GBM who are seen in the setting of neurofibromatosis are associated with having a better prognosis. This stands at odds with the findings of

Razis says glioblastoma is a disease that generally has a poor prognosis. Recent work has been done to investigate the molecular features of the tumors to see if something specific can be targeted, in the hopes of developing more effective treatments. In 2017, she says, the World Health Organization issued a new classification of brain tumors, which was due in large part to the new molecular markers.

Additionally, Razis was part of a study that took tissue from 101 patients with brain cancer and used next-generation sequencing to test for 

 mutations. Findings from this trial were presented at the 2018 ASCO Annual Meeting, which showed that
