Dr Borgen recaps a presentation he made at the 2022 Miami Breast Cancer Conference highlighting the flaws with preprints, outlining his recommendations for fixing peer review, and explaining how this affects cancer research.
Welcome to OncLive On Air®! I’m your host today, Jason Harris.
OncLive On Air® is a podcast from OncLive®, which provides oncology professionals with the resources and information they need to provide the best patient care. In both digital and print formats, OncLive® covers every angle of oncology practice, from new technology to treatment advances to important regulatory decisions.
In today’s episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Patrick Borgen, MD, chair of the Department of Surgery and director of the Breast Cancer Program at Maimonides Medical Center, a community hospital in Brooklyn, New York. COVID-19 ravaged Maimonides in 2020 and 2021 and Dr Borgen saw the grim consequences first-hand.
The desperate scramble to understand the disease “broke” the peer review system, pushing immature, and sometimes inaccurate, science into the public sphere, he said. In this episode, Dr Borgen recapped a presentation he made at the 2022 Miami Breast Cancer Conference® highlighting the flaws with preprints, outlining his recommendations for fixing peer review, and explaining how this affects cancer research.
