Dr. Diane Bodurka, from the MD Anderson Cancer Center, on the Increasing Number of Cancer Surivors
Diane C. Bodurka, MD, professor, Department of Gynecologic Oncology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, explains that special care and consideration is needed to address the complicated issues surrounding cancer survivorship, as the number of cancer survivors increases.
As treatments become more effective, the number of cancer survivors is steadily increasing. This increased population has resulted in higher numbers of comorbidities relating to medical conditions, such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease. As the numbers continue to rise, ongoing monitoring and care becomes more difficult. Additionally, this puzzle continues to become more complicated as the need to address psychosocial needs is added.
As a society we are beginning to realize that more people are being affected by cancer, such as family members, loved ones, or work associates, Bodurka explains. To help address the growing complexity of survivorship care, society must work together to ensure a smooth transition back into the mainstream.
