Dr. Emberton on Focal Therapy Techniques in Prostate Cancer

Mark Emberton, MD, professor of Interventional Oncology, Division of Surgery and Interventional Science, University College London Hospitals, clinical director, Clinical Effectiveness Unit, Royal College of Surgeons of England, discusses techniques of focal therapy in patients with prostate cancer.

It can be challenging for oncologists to target tumor cells in the prostate, Emberton explains. Methods of killing such cells include using extreme temperatures with lasers, radio frequency, and a high-intensity focused ultrasound. However, there needs to be a treatment that is easier to administer, Emberton says.

Some of these simpler formats, which are being investigated in clinical trials, include electricity, targeted agents, and photodynamic therapy.
