Andrzej Jakubowiak, MD, PhD, professor of Medicine, director, Myeloma Program, University of Chicago Medicine, discusses the options for finding a cure for patients with multiple myeloma.
Enough disease is being eliminated in patients with myeloma that researchers can begin identifying patients who are in indefinite or extended remissions, Jakubowiak explains. Because of this, it would be helpful to incorporate tools such as MM Profiler, which can determine if patients are at standard or high risk, into clinical practice.
The goal of finding a cure for multiple myeloma should not be lost, Jakubowiak says. However, he adds that researchers should also identify the patients that do not require overtreatment.
