Dr. Lai on Risk Factors Associated With Glioma

Rose K. Lai, MD, clinical associate professor of Neurology, University of Southern California, discusses results of the Glioma International Case-Control Study.

In the study, which investigated risk factors in 4000 newly diagnosed patients with glioma, researchers sought to determine whether aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) were associated with a risk of disease. Earlier, smaller studies also looking at the association have demonstrated conflicting results, Lai says. However, recent evidence suggests that aspirin is associated with a lower risk of glioma.

Results of this study showed that aspirin was linked with a significant protective effect for patients with glioma; however, NSAIDs were only associated with reduced glioma risk in women.
