Alan Shain, PhD, postdoctoral scholar, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, discusses the role of genetics in melanoma.

There has been excitement in the field of genomics for patients with melanoma for some time now, states Shain.

A problem with sequencing melanoma at a late stage is that there is no way to know the order in which the mutations occurred. But, by understanding the order of mutations, biomarkers for progression may be revealed, Shain says.
