Daniel J. Campbell, TBE, CHFM, FASHE, Regulatory Compliance Officer at Fox Chase Cancer Center, received the Crystal Eagle Leadership Award from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), which represents professionals who design, build, and operate hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

The award is presented annually to an ASHE member whose contributions have affected the healthcare facility management profession and made a difference to the society. Often referred to as “ASHE’s lifetime achievement award,” this award recognizes those who have been instrumental in the creation and optimization of healing environments.

“Words can’t describe my emotions when I received the phone call from the ASHE representative letting me know that I had received this award. I want to express my most sincere gratitude to everyone who nominated me and submitted the application to the ASHE Crystal Eagle selection committee,” Campbell said.

Campbell is a longtime employee of Temple Health. From 1977 through 2004, he was Director of Facilities and Operations at Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Campus, and from 2004 through 2012, he was Senior Facilities Manager for Temple University and Temple University Hospital. Since 2014, he has been the Regulatory Compliance Officer at Fox Chase.

“I can state without reservation that his significant contributions to, and in support of, ASHE at the local and national level, his motivation and support of others in the field, and his decades-long record of accomplishment and service, place him at the top of the very small group of individuals who are worthy of recognition. … Dan has spent a lifetime helping others in healthcare,” Robert W. Siegfried, PE, CHFM, wrote in his letter nominating Campbell for the award. Siegfried is a Regulatory Compliance Officer at Fox Chase.

Those qualities are a focus of the award, which recognizes an outstanding ASHE member for their excellent leadership qualities, innovation, and overall contribution to ASHE and/or the field of healthcare engineering and facility management.

Campbell played a key role in helping ASHE launch its Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM) test and was among the first to take it. “Anxious to take the test and become certified myself, I took the test the first month it was available. I passed and I’m proud to be one of the first 100 CHFMs. My certification number is 98,” Campbell said during a speech accepting the award.

“Ever since the certification test came out, 23-plus years ago, I have made it my ambition to help those willing to pursue a successful career in healthcare facilities management attain CHFM certification.”

In addition, Donald Kirk, CHFM, CHC, Facility Manager at Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Campus, was named a 2024 Emerging Regional Leader by ASHE. The award recognizes 10 exceptional emerging leaders, one from each ASHE region, for their commitment to the field and their interest in developing further leadership skills.
