Stand Up to Cancer Grant Recipients Discuss Initiative to Expand Access to Early-Phase Clinical Trials

Faculty across 4 institutions discuss their participation in a 4-team initiative launched by Stand Up To Cancer® that focuses on expanding access to cancer care and research.

In today’s episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with faculty across 4 institutions who are participating in a 4-team initiative launched by Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C) that focuses on expanding access to cancer care and research.

First, Martin Edelman, MD, the chair of and a professor in the Department of Hematology/Oncology, the deputy cancer center director for Clinical Research, and the G. Morris Dorrance Jr. Chair in Medical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Temple Health, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Linda Fleisher, PhD, MPH, an associate research professor of Health Communications and Health Disparities and a co-director of GMaP Region 4 at Fox Chase Cancer Center, as well as a co-lead at the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Center Cessation Initiative, discussed the importance of diversifying and accelerating access to clinical trials at the Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Next, Anthony B. El-Khoueiry, MD, an associate professor of clinical medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology, a member of the Gastrointestinal Cancers Program, director of the phase I drug development clinical program, and medical director of the Clinical Investigations Support Office at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles, California, and Chanita Hughes-Halbert, PhD, the associate director of Cancer Equity, a professor, and vice chair of research in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, highlighted efforts to eliminate enrollment barriers to early-phase trials in diverse populations in Los Angeles County.

Then, David Gerber, MD, a professor of internal medicine and co-director of the Experimental Therapeutics Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center in Dallas, Texas, and Chika Nwachukwu, MD, PhD, associate program director of Medical Residency at the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and an assistant professor of radiation oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, emphasized the importance of enhancing access to early-phase cancer clinical trials.

Finally, Walter M. Stadler, MD, who is the Fred C. Buffett Professor of Medicine and the deputy director of the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as the dean for Clinical Research at the University of Chicago Medicine in Illinois, noted the importance of enhancing diverse representation in early-phase clinical trials.
