Leader in Supportive Oncology at Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Medical Center to Take Leadership Position with the American College of Physicians.
Tanveer P. Mir, MD, MACP, Director of Outpatient Palliative Care at The Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Medical Center, has been named Chair-elect of the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians (www.acponline.org), the nation’s largest medical specialty organization. Dr. Mir’s term will begin at the conclusion of Internal Medicine 2014, ACP’s annual scientific meeting in Orlando, FL, April 10-12.
A member of the NYU Langone medical faculty since 2012, Dr. Mir is Director of the hospital’s Outpatient Palliative Care program and spearheads the Cancer Center’s Supportive Oncology initiative. Supportive oncology is a specialized area of medicine focused on improving the quality of life for patients and their families affected by cancer from diagnosis to survivorship. The goal of supportive oncology is to reduce the physical and emotional burdens of illness through a collaborative effort with a patient’s principal care providers. Services can include pain and symptom management, supportive counseling and the integration of complimentary therapies such as yoga and other mind-body therapies.
Dr. Mir has been an active member of ACP, currently serving as a Regent on ACP’s Board of Regents. She has been a Master of ACP (MACP) since 2008. MACP is an honorary designation that recognizes ongoing individual service and contributions to the practice of medicine. Dr. Mir served as Governor of the ACP Downstate III Region (New York) and served as Chairperson of the International Medical Graduate subcommittee and Associate’s Committee of the ACP New York Chapter. She received the Laureate Award of NY chapter of ACP 2001, which is awarded to Fellows and Masters of the American College of Physicians who have demonstrated by their example and conduct an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, or research, and in service to their community, their Chapter, and the American College of Physicians. She chaired the ACP Awards Committee from 2010 to 2012 and currently serves as Chair of the International Council.
Board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics and hospice and palliative medicine, Dr. Mir earned her medical degree from the Medical College of the University of Kashmir in India. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
Prior to joining the NYU Langone medical faculty in 2012, Dr. Mir served in progressively responsible positions at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in New York. She was a member of the geriatrics faculty at the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York from 2001-2006. She then served as Senior Medical Director of the Hospice Care Network in Long Island from 2006-2009. From 2009-2012 she served as the Associate Chief of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York.
