Following a national search, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has promoted Emese Zsiros, MD, PhD, FACOG, to lead its Department of Gynecologic Oncology. On staff at Roswell Park since 2014, Dr. Zsiros, an accomplished physician-researcher, will also hold The Shashi Lele, MD, Endowed Chair in Gynecologic Oncology.
Dr. Zsiros has driven many important initiatives in her seven years on the Roswell Park team, changing standard practices not only within Roswell Park, but across the globe.
“Dr. Zsiros’ pioneering work in devising, implementing and documenting a new approach to pain management for patients undergoing surgery has been broadly adopted by surgery programs both inside and outside oncology, with pronounced advantages for patients and the communities they live in. And it was also Dr. Zsiros who proposed a novel treatment combination for patients with late-stage ovarian cancer, a strategy shown to generate long-term clinical benefits for patients with this notoriously hard-to-treat cancer type,” says Candace S. Johnson, PhD, President, CEO and M&T Bank Presidential Chair in Leadership at Roswell Park.
Dr. Zsiros is known as a dedicated mentor to fellows and junior faculty, and is a highly sought-after scientific collaborator with expertise in areas including immunotherapy and minimally invasive surgery. In addition to her clinical and academic roles at Roswell Park, she most recently served as Director of Research and Associate Director of Fellowships within Gynecologic Oncology.
She has also been closely attuned in her clinical practice and her research to the impacts of cancer and cancer treatment on patients’ quality of life and overall well-being.
“I have seen Dr. Zsiros set and achieve ambitious goals, and her successes have positioned her for great accomplishments as Chair,” notes Dr. Johnson. “She is uniquely equipped to shape a new vision in gynecologic oncology, and I look forward to watching the department reach new heights under her leadership.”
The new endowed chair Dr. Zsiros holds is named for her colleague and mentor, Shashikant Lele, MD, FACOG, a longtime faculty member and former Chair of Gynecologic Oncology.
“Whether it’s in the operating room, the clinic or diving headfirst into research, Dr. Zsiros is deeply passionate about her patients and it shows,” said Dr. Lele. “She has made an indelible impression our center, and I am proud to call her my friend.”
A board-certified OB/GYN, Gynecologic Oncologist and a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Dr. Zsiros earned her medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Debrecen Medical and Health Science Center in Hungary. She completed her residency at Northwestern University and fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.
